I've realized one of the things I love in my fiction (in any media) is when after a lengthy series of conflicts and setbacks, a character is suddenly in a position to put their most profound strengths into play.
I.e., Anne Protagonist is backed into a corner by Jack the Nasty, but what Jack doesn't know is that Anne was raised in the Cornerlands of The Nation of Angles, and after being orphaned in the Intersection Wars she was trained in the secret ways of Cornering by the Cornermonks -- that she is in fact a corner specialist, and Jack, having cornered her, now deeply fucked.
The trouble of course is setting that up so that it's properly surprising and satisfying.
