My favorite fantasy books in recent memory are the Gentleman Bastard series, which currently stand at 2 books (The Lies of Locke Lamora and Red Seas under Red Skes). Until recently the author, Scott Lynch, had taken a long hiatus from (evidently) any kind of online activity, and the tentative publication date for the third book had slipped and slipped again, and nobody knew what was going on.

Now! I do not begrudge the man his delay one iota—He doesn't owe me a damn thing. Mostly I was just concerned that he was himself physically okay, and secondarily I hoped his third novel would one day be finished so I could be a giant nerd about it. But I'm a patient man. I can wait.

My waiting has been rewarded! Recently he's revived his online presence, which includes his livejournal ([info]scott_lynch) and twitter account (scottlynch78), and hinted that revisions to the third book are coming along well. He seems to be back among the living, which comes as news of the most welcome kind.

BUT LAST NIGHT, the dude decides that as a favor to his readers who have stuck with him through the delays and so on, he's going to post, chapter-by-chapter, a FREE SERIAL NOVEL about A BADASS LADY PILOT ON MARS.

...IT DOES NOT GET MORE RELEVANT TO MY INTERESTS THAN THAT.

So I went out on a ride today; 28 miles, pushed moderately hard most of the way.

There was a stiff wind coming from the west, which is unusual for Albuquerque, so I decided to head up Carlisle and take advantage of the tailwind to crank up the hill a lot faster than I normally do.

Anyway this school bus pulls up next to me, full of middle schoolers, and they're leaning out of the windows and yelling and carrying on, probably looking at me thinking "LOL SPANDEX" and stuff (which... fair enough.)

I decide what the hell, I'm feeling pretty strong, and there's a tailwind, so let's see if I can drop the hammer. I shift up a gear and stand into a sprint, and just then the wind gusts up and I'm like flying up the hill, 23-24 MPH, and the kids are all "OMG HE'S PASSING US HOLY CRAP GO BIKE DUDE GOOOO."

I felt like a fuckin' superhero.

Went skating at the local roller rink w/ the Duchess. Knee improving; outlook on life tracking steadily w/ knee.

Did you all know I'm a fair-to-middling badass on skates? I bet you didn't. It's the only physical activity other than cycling at which I am not an embarrassment to my genetic heritage.

Knocking down two biggish deadlines this week. After that, November is on schedule to be lovely.

I have not posted in some time, and my last missive to you, my good and dear friends, was redolent of resignation and despair; indeed, that musty odor may have been detectable on your side of the inter-network, a 21st century Smell-o-Vision.

For this, I apologize. I am well.

It came to pass that the former issue resolved itself nicely, and in truth my life is in most respects radical. I don't think that's too strong a word.

As of September 30, I am twenty-nine years old.

( And my birthday weekend was low-key, yet awesome. )

  • Just when I thought Apple stopped caring about it, new GarageBand comes out and kicks ass. Arbitrary parameter curves? Arrangements? Visual EQ? Multi-take recording? Oh fuck yes. I can't believe how cheap and how good GarageBand is.
  • Got back into FFXII. Holy crap this game is awesome.
  • Went by the grocery store and walked right into a palate full of HATCH GREEN CHILE. (Yeah, I know it's not Chimayo, but cut me some slack, Gabe. I'll take what I can get.)
  • Impending freelance deadline is sitting on my head and crushing it, but other than that everything is pretty awesome right now.

Summer in Andalusia

This is me, taking a deep breath.

Apparently there is an anime called Summer in Andalusia, directed by Spirited Away’s animation director and staffed by a bunch of Ghibli veterans. It’s a movie about the Vuelta a Espana, one of the three Grand Tours of cycling (the other two being the Giro d’Italia and the Tour de France.)

So, let’s recap. There’s a movie by guys from my favorite animation studio about my favorite sport. Oh, it was also the first animated film to premier at Cannes.

In 2003.

So why is it that I only find out about it now that the sequel is being announced? I… I just… I’m torn between complete elation and head-shaking bafflement.

So I contain myself but chatter excitedly to my coworkers, one of whom (I was going to say the brilliant one, but they’re all brilliant) says “Oh yeah, also there’s a TV anime about cycling running right now, called Overdrive.”

My forehead is getting red from slapping it so much.

Anyway, I submit that “Summer in Andalusia” may be the best title for a cycling movie ever.

(Actually it looks like Overdrive kind of sucks, but still.)

(They should make an anime about bike messengers.)

(If somebody tells me it’s been done… augh.)

Oh, also I rode to work today and it was fine. Hope to keep it up. I've found a nice 1.5-mile length of low-traffic residential road very close by, and I'm thinking of doing 10 or 15 laps on it as often as I can, in lieu of decent riding in Houston.

Also I'm suddenly interested in trying an actual legitimate race...

Spicy garlic/olive oil/lemon shrimp + Kona Pipeline Porter = crazy delicious.

Seriously, I feel sorry for any beer drinker (which, of my friends list, is like two people, tops) who is missing out on Pipeline Porter. So good. I even like the label design.
