I got a nice watercolor done at NYAF, of Sokka and Suki being adorable. The very talented Holly Mongi was taking commissions, and ali_wildgoose and I spent more time than I'm comfortable admitting discussing exactly what we would have her paint for us.

Anyway.

This is about 6000 words of Avatar fanfiction. It is mostly about Sokka. It takes place in an alternate future timeline some years after the events of the show. Haters may proceed to the left. That is all.

So! I've been working on and off on an Avatar FST for months. I'm pretty much never going to top the ones I've seen various friends come up with (yeah, EK and Ali, you know who you are) but it's been bugging me for a long time, so I'm finally calling it finished and uploading it.

The standard shibboleths of fandom are failing me.

Endless waiting and an inability to peruse the fandom because of potential spoilers have left my enthusiasm for Avatar at an all-time low.

I tried to think of one for Suki but nothing came to mind. Maybe next time.

I was playing around in GarageBand and realized that what I was doing was making an Avatar Season Three/Fire Nation Something. It is just over a minute long, but what do you want from one evening's noodling?

Kind of unsequenced and messy and lame and ugh that poor D minor fifth. I am beating it to death and it didn't do anything to deserve this kind of hamfingered treatment.

But at least I have my studio back. HUZZAH.

Let's just accept that to some, including many of my friends, fanfiction is just about the nerdiest, most pointless, inexplicable, and intellectually bankrupt activity you can participate in. Let's just accept that there are people on my friends list who can, and indeed who probably will (Hi, Hunter and Gabe and probably Erin) mock me mercilessly and and ceaselessly for writing, in a completely non-ironic fashion, Avatar Fanfiction. LET'S JUST GET THAT OUT OF THE WAY NOW, GUYS.

As opposed to when I watched the first two episodes a year ago and was unamused, I am intruged and will polish off the show.

Two factors have changed: I have seen Gunbuster 2, same director and staff (mostly), which started terribly and ended wonderfully, and also the Avatar guys are always going on about how monumentally great FLCL is, so I consider it sort of required viewing as an Avatard.

We'll see how I feel about it in four episodes. I will say this: this "Ultimate Edition" box set has some of the nicest packaging I've seen for an anime box set.
